A Project Book Did some woad dyeing today at some new friends' house. They hadn't used woad/indigo before, but were very well-educated about dyeing in general, much better so than I. Learned: Boil water then let it cool to 130 to use when preparing woad pot. This removes the oxygen, and makes for a better-behaved pot. For a more consistent color, pull fabric from the dye bath, wring, and dip into clear water. This spreads the dye more evenly. Linen takes woad very well, but unbleached takes it better than bleached (duh). Blackberry makes nice purples. So does red cabbage. Grinding cochineal in an iron mortar would probably be unwise, as iron is a saddener. I can properly prepare a woad dye pot even when short on sleep. Current music: The Whinney Hills Jigs - Secret People - Capercaillie. Woohoo! I finished a parasol using the serti technique! I WIN! As soon as my website stops having issues, there will be a picture. It's uploaded, but the site is out of commission just now. Current music: Signal To Noise - The Return Of Pansy Smith And Violet Jones - The Flash Girls. Update on status: I've gotten lots done, if not as much as I might have liked. LOTS of woad-dyed stuff. I decided to do the chain-strap shirt in woad, too, as I am not going to have time to mess with marbling. Also got done the Easter egg scarves. Current music: Banish Misfortune/Road to Lisdoonvarna/O'Keefe's Slide - Old Lead - Boiled in Lead. I have successfully dyed with woad. I win! Current music: Gloomy Sunday - Reissue - Cats Laughing. Okay, order more of the scarves that will make reasonably good altar cloths. Woad-dye at least some of them. Do some stupid amount of the scarves in woad, and the shirt and robe. In addition to one spiderweb parasol, do TWO pentacles and a toadstool (with thanks to Ajka for the idea). Backgrounds for pentacles: one darkdark blue/purple, one oxbloodish. Background for web: shades of blue, purple, green, and black. Get business cards. Put up website, even a tiny one. Make special order forms. Current music: Norwegian Dance From Hungary #1 - The Return Of Pansy Smith And Violet Jones - The Flash Girls. Four more scarves finished, plus the robe for my mother (finally!). Gah, I'm tired. Tomorrow, I'll try to start on a parasol or two. I also need to inventory what I have. Sunday, I'm going to try some woad/indigo dyeing. Some scarves, and, if all goes well, the robe and possibly the shirt I have. Notes to self: Do at least two of the four velvet scarves in Gothy devore patterns: ankhs and soforth. Do some Cthulhu scarves. The silk-fringe square shawl(s) should be vat-dyed black and painted with pentacles. Do one parasol spider-web with multicolored background Do another parasol with a pentacle. what color background? Do one parasol gothy What to do on last parasol? Another pentacle? Two of the abstract burnouts should be done rainbow Try to get in at least one cobweb shawl out of the organza. that's why you bought it, remember? Gah! Current music: Norwegian Dance from Hungary #1 - Buried Things - Folk Underground. Three down, roughly a bazillion to go. Current music: Curse of a Fallen Soul - The Gang's All Here - Dropkick Murphys. So I had an idea, and I want to get opinions again. NorWesCon is Easter weekend. It so happens that Paas Easter egg dyes are quite good for silks and wools. So I now have an impulse to do Eastery scarves in EE dyes, pack them into plastic eggs, and sell those at the Con. Opinions? Current music: Heroes From Our Past - Sing Loud, Sing Proud! - Dropkick Murphys. For some parasols to be taken to NorWesCon: What color background should I give a silver spiderweb? What color background should I give a silver-and-black pentacle? What other two designs should I put on parasols? Current music: Boys On The Docks - Do Or Die - Dropkick Murphys. Well, I have actually gone and purchased a domain. When handpictcreations.com goes live, I'll post it here. Current music: Step it Out Mary - Alloy - Boiled in Lead. |
